LOWER COLUMBIA SCHOOL GARDENS
Cultivating the values of lifelong learning, sustainability, health, and community.
In February of 2010 a team of students, parents and staff took half of the school's central
courtyard and began transforming the blank space into a thriving garden with compost bins,
raised beds, berry rows, grape vines, and small fruit trees. In 2011 they added curved paths,
native plants and Japanese maples. Produce from the school garden appears in the cafeteria
salad bar (50 feet away). Monticello Garden Club meets twice a week after school to work and
cook; rain doesn't slow them down. These kids are fired up about hard work and fresh food!
